Civil Engineering & Infrastructure Scaffolding in Dorset & Hampshire

Civil engineering projects often need scaffolding in places where conventional access simply isn't practical. Bridges cross water and live roads, structural supports can be difficult to reach, and the ground beneath the work may be inaccessible or unsuitable for supporting a scaffold.

Sector Overview

Civil Engineering & Infrastructure

Unlike conventional building scaffolding, these projects frequently require fully engineered arrangements, with loads transferred into existing structures, cantilevered supports or purpose-designed foundations.

TWK Scaffolding provides specialist access solutions for civil engineering and infrastructure projects across Dorset, Hampshire and the surrounding areas, including bridges, marine structures, transport infrastructure and public facilities.

Our experience includes bespoke hanging scaffolds for bridge repairs, complex access arrangements and scaffolding packages supporting major public infrastructure developments.

From suspended working platforms and structural bridging to temporary staircases, pedestrian access and protective containment, we work with principal contractors and specialist designers to develop practical solutions for challenging environments.

Applications & Scaffolding Solutions

01

Bridge Maintenance & Suspended Scaffolding

Access beneath bridges and viaducts often cannot be provided using conventional ground-supported scaffolding, particularly where the structure crosses water, roads or other inaccessible areas.

TWK provides fully designed hanging and suspended scaffolds, using specialist beams, brackets and suitable structural connections to support working platforms beneath or alongside the structure.

These arrangements provide access for concrete repairs, bearing inspections, steelwork maintenance, painting and other specialist activities.

The supporting structure, suspension points, platform loading and installation sequence are all considered during the design process.

02

Complex Structures, Cantilevers & Bridging

Civil engineering structures rarely follow the straightforward geometry of a building elevation.

Restricted support positions, projecting sections, changes in level and limited access can require cantilevered scaffolds, engineered bridging arrangements or purpose-designed supporting structures.

We work with specialist scaffold designers to establish practical arrangements, including the loads transferred into the existing structure and how the scaffold will be erected safely.

Where appropriate, prefabricated beams and traditional tube-and-fitting scaffolding can be combined to overcome restrictions that would otherwise prevent access.

03

Public Access, Staircases & Temporary Footbridges

Infrastructure projects sometimes require pedestrian routes to remain available while construction or repair works take place nearby.

We can provide HAKI stair systems, public access staircases and temporary footbridges, designed to suit the required layout, pedestrian loading and site conditions.

These installations require additional consideration of public protection, guarding, access arrangements and separation from construction activities.

Where the work affects a highway, footpath or other public route, the proposed arrangements must also be coordinated with the relevant authorities and any necessary permissions.

04

Containment & Environmental Protection

Bridge repairs, abrasive blasting, coating removal and other infrastructure maintenance activities can produce dust, debris and material that must be prevented from entering the surrounding environment.

TWK can incorporate Monoflex sheeting, shrink-wrap encapsulation and protective screening into the scaffold arrangement to support the project’s containment requirements.

Where works take place above watercourses or environmentally sensitive locations, additional measures may be needed to manage falling materials, waste and potential contamination.

We coordinate the scaffold enclosure with the principal contractor and specialist trades, taking account of access, ventilation, wind loading and environmental requirements.

05

Temporary Roofing, Edge Protection & General Access

Not every infrastructure project requires a suspended scaffold.

Independent access scaffolding, temporary edge protection and temporary roofing may also be needed around abutments, retaining walls, structural supports and associated buildings.

We can combine these arrangements into a wider scaffolding package, coordinating access for different trades and stages of construction.

The TWK Approach

On civil engineering projects, the biggest challenge is often working out how the scaffold can be supported and erected before the first component reaches site.

We start with a detailed survey and an understanding of the work being undertaken. Where access is restricted, we look at the supporting structure, available fixing points, working loads and the practicalities of getting operatives and materials into position.

For suspended and cantilevered structures, we work alongside specialist scaffold designers to develop project-specific drawings and structural calculations. The existing structure must be assessed for the additional loads, with suitable verification of the proposed connections and supporting elements.

The erection sequence is considered as part of the design, not left until the scaffolders arrive.

On bridges and marine structures, for example, access may be affected by water levels, tides, restricted working space or the need to maintain traffic and other operations around the structure.

We also consider what is happening beneath the scaffold. Works above roads, pedestrian routes or waterways require careful planning of exclusion zones, lifting operations and protection against falling materials.

Where the scaffold needs to accommodate containment, debris netting or protective sheeting, the additional loading and fixing requirements are incorporated into the design.

Our teams work to approved drawings and site-specific method statements, with suitable supervision, inspections and controlled arrangements for any alterations.

The aim is to provide an engineered access solution that can be safely installed, gives the contractor the working area required and accommodates the restrictions of the infrastructure being maintained or constructed.

Our Civil Engineering & Infrastructure Projects

Suspended scaffolding installed beneath Ferry Bridge in Weymouth, Dorset

Ferry Bridge, Weymouth — Bespoke Hanging Scaffold

Working for Heidelberg Materials, TWK was appointed to provide a specialist hanging scaffold beneath Ferry Bridge, connecting Weymouth with Portland.

The scaffold was required to provide access for concrete repairs to the underside of the bridge, directly above the water, where conventional ground-supported scaffolding was unsuitable.

Working alongside Acute Scaffold Design Ltd, we developed a bespoke engineered arrangement to accommodate the existing bridge structure, restricted access and challenging working conditions.

The project required detailed planning of the suspension arrangements, structural loading and erection sequence to establish safe working platforms beneath the bridge.

It demonstrates TWK’s ability to deliver specialist access solutions for demanding civil engineering and infrastructure projects.

Blandford HWRC — New Public Infrastructure Development

Working for Heidelberg Materials, TWK provided scaffolding as part of the construction of the new Blandford Household Waste Recycling Centre and waste management facility.

The project formed part of a substantial public infrastructure development, involving structural construction and several trades working across different areas of the site.

Our scaffolding package required coordination with the principal contractor’s construction programme, with access arrangements planned around the progress of the works and changing site requirements.

The project also demonstrates TWK’s ongoing working relationship with Heidelberg Materials across construction and infrastructure schemes.
