Scaffold Design & Complex Scaffolds in Dorset & Hampshire

Not every building or construction project lends itself to a conventional scaffold arrangement. Restricted ground access, unusual building geometry, heavy loading requirements and complex structural conditions can all call for a different approach.

Service Overview

Where a scaffold falls outside a recognised standard configuration, such as NASC TG20, it requires a bespoke design supported by structural calculations to establish how the scaffold will safely carry its loads and remain stable throughout erection, use and dismantling.

These requirements commonly arise with cantilevered and suspended scaffolds, temporary roofs, complex bridging arrangements, loading platforms, gantries and structures where conventional support or tying arrangements aren’t possible.

TWK Scaffolding delivers fully designed and engineered access solutions across Dorset, Hampshire and the surrounding areas, working alongside specialist scaffold designers to develop practical arrangements for challenging projects.

From hanging scaffolds beneath bridges to substantial temporary roofs and complex industrial installations, our experience extends well beyond conventional access scaffolding.

Applications & Available Solutions

Complex scaffolding is about finding a practical solution where a standard arrangement doesn’t meet the requirements of the building or the works being undertaken.

Cantilevered, Suspended & Hanging Scaffolds

Where a scaffold cannot be supported directly from the ground, alternative arrangements may be required to transfer the loads into a suitable supporting structure.

Cantilevered scaffolds, truss-outs and suspended arrangements can provide access beneath bridges, around projecting structures or in locations where conventional standards cannot be positioned.

These installations require careful consideration of the supporting structure, connection details, imposed loads and erection sequence.

Scaffold Bridges & Structural Spans

Prefabricated beams and purpose-designed scaffold arrangements can be used to bridge entrances, roads, pedestrian routes and areas where ground-level supports would obstruct access.

The design establishes how the loads are transferred through the beams and supporting scaffold, allowing working platforms to be positioned above openings or across otherwise inaccessible areas.

Temporary Roofs & Freestanding Structures

Large temporary roofs, independently supported scaffolds and structures with limited tying opportunities require detailed engineering to establish stability under the expected loading and weather conditions.

Wind loading, uplift, bracing, foundations and the interaction between supporting scaffolds and roofing systems all form part of the design.

Gantries, Loading Platforms & Heavy-Duty Scaffolds

Some projects require scaffolding to accommodate heavy materials, specialist equipment or lifting operations.

This can involve reinforced loading bays, purpose-designed gantries, heavy-duty working platforms and supporting structures designed around specific loading requirements.

Where appropriate, the design also considers how materials will be delivered, transferred and removed without obstructing other site operations.

Irregular & Restricted-Access Structures

Curved elevations, heritage buildings, industrial installations and complicated roof profiles often require scaffolding that follows the shape of the structure rather than a conventional straight elevation.

Using tube-and-fitting scaffolding, specialist beams and suitable system components, we can develop arrangements around existing features, restricted access points and unusual building geometry.

Typical Applications

  • Bridges, marine structures and civil engineering works
  • Industrial installations and specialist maintenance
  • Complex commercial and residential developments
  • Heritage buildings and irregular structures
  • Heavy-duty loading platforms and gantries
  • Temporary roofing, suspended access and structural refurbishment

The TWK Approach

A complex scaffold needs to be practical to build, not just structurally sound on a drawing.

We start by understanding the building, the work being undertaken and the restrictions that make a conventional scaffold unsuitable. This includes the available support, working loads, access requirements, construction sequence and how the scaffold will interact with the surrounding structure.

From there, we work with experienced scaffold designers to develop a suitable arrangement, considering everything from leg loads, ties and bracing to structural connections, wind loading and the stability of the scaffold during erection and dismantling.

Where a standard TG20:21 compliance sheet or applicable manufacturer’s configuration is suitable, we use it. Where the scaffold falls outside those parameters, we coordinate a bespoke design with the necessary drawings and structural calculations.

Particular attention is given to how the scaffold will actually be erected. Some designs may require temporary supports, progressive installation sequences or specialist lifting arrangements before the completed structure becomes self-supporting or fully restrained.

We also consider the needs of the trades using the scaffold. Platform loading, access points, material handling and future alterations are discussed during planning, helping to avoid unnecessary changes once the structure is in place.

Our experienced scaffolding teams work to the agreed design and site-specific method statements, with appropriate supervision, inspections and controls over any alterations.

The result is a scaffold designed around the actual project requirements, with the engineering, erection method and construction programme considered together from the outset.
