Goods & Passenger Hoists in Dorset & Hampshire

Moving people, tools and materials between working levels can become a major logistical challenge on multi-storey construction and refurbishment projects. Without suitable lifting arrangements, valuable working time is lost carrying materials through buildings or relying on stair access.

Service Overview

Construction hoists provide a practical solution, transporting materials and, where the equipment is specifically designed for it, operatives directly to the levels where they are needed.

From compact goods hoists for roofing and scaffolding works to larger passenger and goods hoists serving high-rise buildings, the right equipment can make a substantial difference to productivity, manual handling and the overall construction programme.

TWK Scaffolding supplies and coordinates the installation of goods and passenger hoists throughout Dorset, Hampshire and the surrounding areas. Alongside the hoist itself, we can provide the supporting scaffolding, loading bays, landing platforms and purpose-designed access arrangements needed to integrate the equipment into the project.

Applications & Available Solutions

The most suitable hoist depends on the height of the building, the materials being transported, the number of people using it and the available space for loading and unloading.

Goods-Only Hoists

Goods hoists are designed to transport building materials, tools and equipment between working levels without the need for manual carrying.

We can provide solutions ranging from compact GEDA 300Z material hoists, with a 300kg lifting capacity, to larger rack-and-pinion goods hoists capable of transporting heavier materials and palletised loads.

These systems are particularly useful for brickwork, roofing, cladding and refurbishment projects where regular material deliveries are required at height.

Goods-only hoists must not be used to transport passengers.

Passenger & Goods Hoists

On larger construction projects, particularly high-rise developments and tower block refurbishments, passenger hoists provide a dedicated means of moving operatives between floors.

These enclosed rack-and-pinion systems can also accommodate building materials within their rated capacity and approved loading arrangements.

By reducing reliance on stair towers and manual material handling, passenger hoists can significantly improve movement around a busy site, especially where several trades are working across multiple levels simultaneously.

Transport Platforms

Transport platforms provide another option where both materials and authorised personnel need to be moved between working levels.

Depending on the machine, the platform can accommodate different loading arrangements and operate within specific restrictions on travel speed, capacity and passenger numbers.

These systems can be particularly useful on refurbishment projects and sites with restricted access where a conventional enclosed passenger hoist may not be the most practical option.

The selected platform must be approved and configured for its intended use, including the carriage of personnel where required.

Compact & Scaffold Material Hoists

For smaller projects, roofing works and scaffold erection or dismantling, compact material hoists can provide a more practical option than installing a larger construction hoist.

Purpose-made racks and attachments can be used to transport scaffold tubes, boards and fittings, subject to the machine’s approved configuration.

Where hoists are used during scaffold erection or dismantling, we plan the operation in accordance with the relevant manufacturer’s requirements and NASC SG26 guidance, with suitable safeguards and restricted use by trained, authorised personnel.

Typical Applications

  • Multi-storey new-build construction
  • High-rise recladding and refurbishment
  • Roofing and façade replacement
  • Industrial and commercial construction
  • Scaffold erection and dismantling
  • Material handling on restricted-access sites

The TWK Approach

A hoist is only useful if it is positioned correctly and works with the construction programme. There’s little benefit in installing a large goods hoist if materials still have to be carried halfway around the scaffold once they reach the required level.

We start by looking at the building, the type and quantity of materials being lifted, the required landing levels and the anticipated movement of operatives throughout the day.

The available ground conditions, power supply, access for installation and supporting structure are all considered before recommending a suitable arrangement.

One of the most important aspects is coordinating the hoist with the scaffold. Hoist ties transfer significant loads into the supporting structure, and where a hoist is connected to scaffolding, that scaffold must be specifically assessed and designed to accommodate the additional forces.

We also plan the landing arrangements, gated openings, run-off platforms and loading areas to ensure materials can be transferred safely and efficiently at each level.

TWK works with specialist hoist providers and installers to coordinate equipment selection, installation, structural requirements and the necessary examination and commissioning procedures.

Before use, the equipment must have the required inspections and thorough examination under LOLER, with suitable records and operating information provided. Responsibilities for ongoing inspections, maintenance and operation are agreed with the client and hoist provider.

Our experience delivering hoists alongside substantial scaffolding packages means we understand how important the equipment becomes to the overall programme, particularly when several trades rely on the same access and lifting arrangements.
