Project Overview

TWK Scaffolding was appointed by Amiri Construction to provide a comprehensive scaffolding and access package for the new School of Art & Design at Barton Peveril Sixth Form College in Eastleigh, Hampshire.

The two-storey development provides six classrooms, five specialist art and design studios, an IT suite and a dedicated hot-works room, expanding the college’s teaching facilities.

With the new building being constructed within a fully operational college campus, access and construction activities needed to be coordinated around the movement of students, staff and other contractors.

Our package included external access scaffolding, progressive internal working platforms, HAKI stair systems, temporary edge protection and a dedicated scaffold interface for a goods hoist.

The different arrangements were introduced as construction progressed, ensuring the relevant trades had suitable access at each stage of the programme.

The Challenge — Early Access on a Live College Campus

The project required more than conventional external scaffolding.

With the new building positioned close to the college’s rear entrance, access routes, material deliveries and construction activities needed to be carefully coordinated within an operational educational environment.

One of the first challenges was providing suitable edge protection before the main external access scaffold was ready to be erected.

Early construction activities needed to proceed, but exposed edges required collective protection before operatives could safely carry out their work.

The building also required several different forms of access as construction progressed.

External scaffolding needed to follow the development of the building, while internal platforms were required as the structure and internal working areas took shape.

At the same time, dedicated stair access and material handling arrangements had to be incorporated into the overall programme.

The challenge was coordinating these elements so each stage of the build had the access it needed without unnecessarily delaying the next trade.

The TWK Solution — Access Planned Around the Construction Sequence

Early Edge Protection Installed from MEWPs

Rather than waiting for the main external scaffold to be erected, TWK installed the initial temporary edge protection using Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs).

This allowed the protection to be put in place at an earlier stage, providing the collective fall protection needed for construction activities to progress.

The installation was planned around the available access and the building’s stage of construction, allowing the following trades to begin their work before the main external scaffolding was established.

This is a good example of how adjusting the scaffold installation sequence can benefit the wider construction programme.

External & Progressive Internal Scaffolding

As the building developed, we provided external working platforms to support the construction and finishing trades.

The scaffold arrangements progressed alongside the structure, accommodating the changing access requirements as different areas became available.

Internally, we erected progressive working platforms to support construction activities throughout the building.

Providing internal and external access as part of the same scaffolding package helped coordinate the different requirements rather than treating them as separate appointments.

HAKI Stair Systems

TWK supplied HAKI stair access to provide dedicated routes between the scaffold working levels.

The staircase arrangements were incorporated into the wider access package, providing a practical means of movement for operatives working across different areas of the development.

Their positioning needed to be considered alongside the external scaffold, internal working platforms and the changing construction sequence.

Goods-Hoist Interface & Material Access

Material handling was another important part of the project.

We provided the necessary scaffold interface for a goods hoist, coordinating the access arrangement with the hoist position and the working levels it needed to serve.

This allowed the material handling arrangements to be considered alongside the scaffolding rather than introduced separately once construction was under way.

The hoist interface formed part of our wider scaffolding package for Amiri Construction.

Project Delivery & Outcome

The completed scaffolding package supported the different stages of construction, from early edge protection through to external access, internal working platforms and dedicated stair arrangements.

Installing edge protection from MEWPs before the main scaffold was erected allowed early works to proceed without waiting for the external access structure.

As construction developed, the progressive scaffolding arrangements provided access where required, with HAKI stair systems and the goods-hoist interface supporting movement between working levels.

All of this took place within a fully operational college campus, where construction activity needed to be coordinated around the continued use of the educational facilities.

The new School of Art & Design was completed in spring 2025.

The project demonstrates TWK’s ability to deliver a coordinated scaffolding package that develops alongside the building, with access, edge protection and material handling considered as part of the overall construction sequence.
