HMS Alliance, Gosport — Specialist Marine Encapsulation

Specialist shrink-wrap encapsulation around historic HMS Alliance, providing protection during blasting and painting.

Scaffold access around HMS Alliance in Gosport

Project Overview

TWK Scaffolding provided specialist shrink-wrap encapsulation during restoration works to HMS Alliance at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, Hampshire.

HMS Alliance is the only surviving British submarine from the Second World War era. Launched in 1945 and measuring approximately 86 metres in length, the vessel is an important part of Britain’s naval heritage.

The refurbishment required protective encapsulation to provide a more controlled working environment for surface preparation, grit blasting and painting.

Unlike a conventional building, the submarine’s long, curved hull and projecting features presented particular challenges when installing a continuous protective covering.

Our work involved installing shrink-wrap encapsulation around the required working areas, helping protect the refurbishment activities from the elements while containing dust and debris generated during the works.

The Challenge — Encapsulating an Unusual Historic Structure

Encapsulating a submarine presents a very different challenge to wrapping a conventional building.

The curved hull, changes in profile and numerous projecting features make it difficult to achieve a consistent, tightly fitted covering.

With grit blasting and painting forming part of the restoration, the enclosure also needed to help prevent dust, spent abrasive materials and other debris from escaping into the surrounding environment.

The museum’s marine setting added another consideration, with the protective covering exposed to changing weather conditions.

Careful planning was required to accommodate the vessel’s unusual geometry while maintaining suitable protection around the areas undergoing refurbishment.

The TWK Solution — A Continuous Protective Enclosure

We installed a specialist heat-shrunk covering around the required areas of HMS Alliance, adapting the material to follow the contours of the submarine.

The shrink-wrap system allowed adjoining sections to be heat-welded together, creating a continuous protective enclosure around the working areas.

Particular attention was given to the changes in the hull’s shape and the projecting features, where conventional flat sheeting arrangements would be less effective.

The completed encapsulation provided shelter from the weather and helped contain dust and debris during the surface preparation and painting activities.

By creating a more protected working environment, the covering supported the specialist contractors carrying out the restoration while helping reduce the impact of those activities on the surrounding museum and marine environment.

Project Delivery & Outcome

The project required a practical approach to encapsulation, with the installation adapted to the unusual shape and characteristics of a historic submarine.

The finished protective covering supported the restoration activities by providing weather protection and helping contain the materials generated during surface preparation and painting.

HMS Alliance demonstrates TWK’s experience delivering specialist shrink-wrap solutions for structures where conventional building shapes and installation methods do not apply.

It also highlights the versatility of shrink-wrap encapsulation beyond traditional construction projects, particularly within marine, industrial and heritage environments.
