Temporary Roof Scaffolding for School Sports Hall Demolition
TWK Scaffolding was appointed to design, supply and erect a specialist temporary roof scaffolding system to facilitate the safe demolition of an existing sports hall while allowing the school to remain fully operational throughout the construction programme.
Working within a live educational environment presented a number of challenges, requiring careful planning and innovative engineering solutions. The temporary roof structure was designed to provide complete weather protection, environmental containment and safe working conditions while demolition and asbestos removal works were carried out below.
Temporary Roof Scaffolding in a Live School Environment
Unlike traditional temporary roof projects, the sensitive nature of the site meant that a crane could not be used to assemble large roof sections at ground level and lift them into position. This approach would have created unnecessary disruption and increased risks within the school grounds.
To overcome these challenges, TWK Scaffolding developed an innovative “mobile roof” solution. This allowed our operatives to safely erect each roof bay directly on top of the independent scaffold structure before progressively moving the completed sections along the building as the installation advanced.
The system enabled all twelve bays of the temporary roof framework to be assembled efficiently while maintaining a safe working environment and minimising disruption to school operations.
Fully Weatherproof Temporary Roof Structure
Once the roof framework had been completed, heavy-duty temporary roof sheeting was installed across the entire structure to provide complete weather protection. This ensured demolition and construction activities could continue regardless of weather conditions, helping the project maintain programme deadlines throughout the works.
The temporary roof scaffolding system was specifically designed to provide:
- Full weather protection
- Safe demolition access
- Environmental containment
- Dust and debris control
- Protection for adjacent occupied buildings
- Continuous operation of the school facilities
This approach allowed the client to proceed with critical demolition works without affecting day-to-day school activities.
Environmental Protection and Asbestos Containment
A key requirement of the project was the creation of a fully enclosed environmental protection system due to the significant asbestos removal works taking place prior to demolition.
To achieve the highest level of containment, the temporary roof sheeting was effectively sandwiched between scaffold boards and the roof structure to create a secure seal. Flame-retardant Monoflex sheeting was then installed around the perimeter of the scaffold, creating a fully enclosed working environment.
This specialist environmental protection scaffold helped contain dust, debris and airborne contaminants within the structure while demolition and asbestos remediation works were undertaken.
The environmental seal had to meet exceptionally high standards to ensure the safety of students, staff, contractors and neighbouring properties throughout the project.
