Industrial Scaffolding at Diamond Light Source, Oxfordshire
TWK Scaffolding was selected to deliver specialist industrial scaffolding services for a major access project at the prestigious Diamond Light Source facility, located within the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire.
As the UK’s national synchrotron, Diamond Light Source is one of the country’s most advanced scientific research facilities. Due to the complex nature of the site and its operational requirements, extensive planning, collaboration and engineering input were required before works could commence.
Following several weeks of design development, planning meetings and scaffold design revisions, TWK Scaffolding successfully mobilised to site and began delivering this high-profile project.
Specialist Industrial Scaffolding Planning
The project presented a number of logistical and technical challenges from the outset. One of the first major tasks involved delivering all scaffold materials required for the works into a highly restricted operational environment.
More than 180 tonnes of scaffolding equipment were required for the project. Due to site constraints and access restrictions, all materials had to be transported into the inner section of the facility using a crane.
To facilitate this process, the scaffold materials were carefully organised into approximately one-tonne lifting packs. Over a three-day period, the entire quantity of equipment was delivered, unloaded and prepared for lifting operations.
The crane then completed approximately 180 separate lifts, transporting scaffold materials across the roof structure and into the designated work areas. Through careful planning and coordination between TWK Scaffolding, the client and the lifting team, the operation was completed safely, efficiently and within the agreed programme.
Large-Scale Access Scaffolding Installation
Following the successful completion of the mobilisation phase, TWK Scaffolding commenced the installation of a substantial access scaffold around the facility.
The project involved the construction of more than 400 linear metres of fully boarded industrial scaffolding, erected to five working lifts in height. The scaffold was specifically designed to provide safe access for inspection, maintenance and construction activities while accommodating the unique geometry of the building.
Several bridge sections were incorporated into the scaffold design to overcome access restrictions and maintain continuous safe access around the structure.
The complexity of the works required a highly experienced site team capable of operating within a live scientific environment while maintaining the highest standards of safety and workmanship.
